Wikimedia Foundation gets $500,000 donation

by Daniel Terdiman

It’s been a good week for the coffers of the Wikimedia Foundation.

On Tuesday, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation announced it was giving $3 million over three years to the organization that runs Wikipedia.

And on Thursday, top-dog venture capitalist Vinod Khosla and his wife, Neeru, said they were going to donate $500,000 to the foundation.

This is good news for an organization that has been recently criticized over its finances, particularly from those who say founder Jimmy Wales may have played a little fast and loose with the foundation’s credit card when it came to personal expenses. The foundation’s executive director, Sue Gardner, has strongly denied the charges, arguing that Wales did nothing wrong.

Still, with some ill winds circling around, it must be gratifying for the Wikimedia Foundation to be seeing people and institutions like the Khoslas and the Sloan Foundation giving it votes of confidence with their wallets.

As for the Khosla money, it’s unclear exactly what it will be used for. The Sloan money, it is said, will go toward, among other things, helping to support the construction of a Wikipedia feature called “flagged revisions,” which is designed to allow “experienced editors to publicly and visibly grade the quality status of articles–in effect, functioning as a kind of ‘nutrition labeling’ for Wikipedia content.”

Another thing that’s unclear is exactly how much control the Khoslas and the Sloan Foundation get over how their donations will be used.

Some, like Valleywag editor Owen Thomas, have argued that the new money gives the donors oversight that could curtail what critics contend is profligate spending. Whether that control actually exists is not known.

Gavin Degraw - I Don’t Want To Be

I Don’t Want To Be

I don’t want to be
Anything other than what I’ve been trying to be lately
All I have to do
Is think of me and I have peace of mind
I’m tired of looking ’round rooms
Wondering what I’ve got to do
Or who I’m supposed to be
I don’t want to be anything other than me

I don’t need to be anything other
Than a prison guard’s son
I don’t need to be anything other
Than a specialist’s son
I don’t have to be anyone other
Than the birth of two souls in one
Part of where I’m going, is knowing where I’m coming from

I don’t want to be
Anything other than what I’ve been trying to be lately
All I have to do
Is think of me and I have peace of mind
I’m tired of looking ’round rooms
Wondering what I’ve got to do
Or who I’m supposed to be
I don’t want to be anything other than me

I’m surrounded by liars everywhere I turn
I’m surrounded by imposters everywhere I turn
I’m surrounded by identity crisis everywhere I turn
Am I the only one who noticed?
I can’t be the only one who’s learned!

I don’t want to be
Anything other than what I’ve been trying to be lately
All I have to do
Is think of me and I have peace of mind
I’m tired of looking ’round rooms
Wondering what I’ve got to do
Or who I’m supposed to be
I don’t want to be anything other than me

Can I have everyone’s attention please?
If you’re not like this and that, you’re gonna have to leave
I came from the mountain
The crust of creation
My whole situation-made from clay to stone
And now I’m telling everybody

I don’t want to be
Anything other than what I’ve been trying to be lately
All I have to do
Is think of me and I have peace of mind
I’m tired of looking ’round rooms
Wondering what I’ve got to do
Or who I’m supposed to be
I don’t want to be anything other than me

I don’t even know how you feel on this issue, but please sign & forward, or just forward.

SOCIAL SECURITY CHANGES
It does not matter if you personally like or dislike Bush. You need to sign this petition and flood his e-mail box with e-mails that tell him that, even if the House passes this bill, he needs to veto it. It is already impossible to live on Social Security alone. If the government gives benefits to ‘illegal’ aliens who have never contributed, where does that leave those of us who have paid into Social Security all our working lives?

As stated below, the Senate voted this week to allow ‘illegal’ aliens access to Social Security benefits.
Attached is an opportunity to sign a petition that requires citizenship for eligibility to that social service.

Instructions are below. If you don’t forward the petition and just stop it, we will lose all these names.

If you do not want to sign it, please just forward it to everyone you know.

Thank you! To add your name, click on ‘forward’. Address it to all of your email correspondents, add your name to the list and send it on.

When the petition hits 1,000, send it to comment@whitehouse.gov

PETITION for President Bush:

Dear Mr President:
We, the undersigned, protest the bill that the Senate voted on recently which would allow illegal aliens to access our Social Security. We demand that you and all Congressional representatives require citizenship as a pre-requisite for social services in the United States.

We further demand that there not be any amnesty given to illegals, NO free services, no funding, no payments to and for illegal immigrants. We are fed up with the lack of action about this matter and are tired of paying for services to illegals.

Tired but oh soo worth it!

Wow I am really Tired, I went the mundane working for the weekend route this weekend. YAY Spring! I tapped into an ongoing acoustic blues jam out at a farm in the country that has been going of for years. I walked in with Taylor in tow and proceeded to play with these cats until about 5 am, it seemed like it was midnight. Man was that ever fun! I think I learned about 20 new chord substitutions for Blues from this one cat named Sky, he was in his 70’s and played his ass off. My fingers are raw, it hurts to dial my phone. I was invited back, I also was asked to audition for an electric blues band here in town. I have never heard of them or heard them, I guess I will find out this week.

At 6:30 AM Saturday I had an existing client call me yelling at me at the top of her lungs. I have never done this in all these years but I hung up on the bitch. I’m sorry calling someone on a Saturday morning at 6:30 am in the morning is just bad form. I turned my cell off and when I woke back up at 10 am I had 16 messages from her, consequently she is fired as a client forth with. I dislike it when I have to do that, I’m glad they are few and far between. After running on 4.5 hours of sleep I had to drive into Fry’s to get a bunch of Computer cases, I was a Zombi pretty much no matter how many rock starts I drank. At 3PM I was fast asleep on my couch =D

On Saturday night I went to see the best show I have seen in a long long time, I walked away completely inspired. It was such a bonus to be at this show with other artists who also walked away inspired. The opening act was “that one guy” I have seen him before but never in such a large venue. This guy makes all of his own instruments the main one he plays called the Magic Pipe =D. In this venue with that huge PA it was thumping like a Desert Rave, I’m glad we brought a bunch of glow sticks with us. I was skankin my arse off, it was a gas. I just can’t describe to you much more, I mean the guy makes his own instruments including the magic boot and magic saw. Just watch the you tube clip below and by all means go see him if you get the chance!

The headlining act was Buckethead AKA Brian Carol from Claremont 10 miles away from where I grew up. He was a crack Shred guitar teacher at Styles Music for 2 years before the Buckethead persona caught on. I always admired his shred but I’m a Blues / Jazz player at heart so his compositions never really moved me. I have seen him probably 20 or so times, at NAMM and at local clubs but not in the last 10 years. Boy has his playing changed, gone was the shred king and in was the Ballad playing blues exploding new and improved Shredder. His playing changed so much, I was so musically moved by his performance. I think the hair on the back of my head my head is still standing up. For the gear head in me I have to note he was paying split Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifiers one with a 15“ speaker cabinet which is a Bass guitar Cabinet. Sonically it made his tone insane, I could feel it punching off my chest all night in the pit. I was right in front moshing my ass off like a college student, can’t take the child out of this musician boy I tell you. Way to much fun! I did rip open the incision just a bit from my procedure last week which in turned completely ruined the shirt I was wearing but I didn’t feel a thing. Here’s a couple of you tube videos of Buckethead from you tube.

And my favorite Buckethead tune Jordan:

Flow of Life

Obama 2008

Senator Obama’s speech yesterday was quite compelling. Honestly, the man looked so worn and tired and the crowd noticed how exhausted he looked. Seeing him was like listening to a John F Kennedy speech back in high school, complete logic and insight. People say he had no political solutions, that is a bunch of FUD. I listened to hours of political solutions last night, they made a lot of sense to me. How can anyone truly say that a man who says “he will pull our troops out of Iraq in 1 year” has no political solutions? Last night he said “if I’m elected President it will still be a seven year long war, If we cant get Iraq straightened out in 5 years let alone 7 we can never straighten out Iraq.” That’s a man speaking the truth!

Balls of Steele!

Anyone who can stand in front of Tom Brechtlein and at the same time stand in between Robben Ford and Roscoe Beck and even make a sound on his guitar is my hero. If that were me I would have peed myself. Really, I bet that’s the one thing in this here life that could make me wee myself I reckon. I think the kid who is sitting in is playing so slow and so straight out of sheer awe and fear simultaneously so he wont make one mistake. He didn’t! I have no idea who is but I take my hat off to him, his performance was flawless.
Check it!

Finally!

Spring is here :) Time for warm weather and traveling plans whoop whoop! Everything is blooming my lawn is growing leaps and bounds. Spring is also the time to protest the war which I have done twice, once Sunday and once yesterday. NO MORE WAR NO MORE WAR NO MORE WAR!

Class Action Complaint Against RIAA Now Online

From Slashdot

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes “Recommended reading for all interested in the RIAA’s litigation war against p2p file sharing is the amended class action complaint just filed in Oregon in Andersen v. Atlantic. This landmark 109-page document (pdf) tells both the general story of the RIAA’s campaign against ordinary folks, and the specific story of its harassment of Tanya Andersen, and even of her young daughter. The complaint includes federal and state RICO claims, as well as other legal theories, and alleges that “The world’s four major recording studios had devised an illegal enterprise intent on maintaining their virtually complete monopoly over the distribution of recorded music.” The point has been made by one commentator that the RIAA won’t be able to weasel its out of this one by simply withdrawing it; this one, they will have to answer for. If the relief requested in the complaint is granted, the RIAA’s entire campaign will be shut down for good.”

Ok you’re a banana!
